While speaking at a press conference in Peshawar, IGP Gandapur revealed that Mohammad Wali was arrested from Jamil Chowk a few days ago. Authorities seized two suicide vests during the arrest.

The IG further disclosed that Wali’s role in the attack came to light during the ongoing investigation, which also confirmed that he was working as a constable in the police department at the time.

The KP IGP further revealed that Wali had previously met with members of the banned militant organization, Jamaatul Ahrar, including its spokesperson, Mohammad Khurasani.

During questioning, Wali confessed that in 2021, he was approached via Facebook by an individual named ‘Junaid, who turned out to be a recruitment agent for Jamaat-ul-Ahrar,

Junaid, who was operating from Afghanistan, used social media platforms to recruit individuals for Jamaat-ul-Ahrar. He invited Wali to visit him in Afghanistan, and in 2021, Wali took a leave of absence from his police duties and crossed the Chaman border to meet Junaid in Jalalabad.

While in Afghanistan, Wali was introduced to Junaid’s associates and taken to the Shunkar and Chaknawar areas in Kunar. There, he met two senior commanders of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, Salahuddin and Mukarram Khorasani. Following the meeting, Wali swore allegiance to the group and officially joined Jamaat-ul-Ahrar.

As part of his recruitment, Wali was given a payment of 20,000 rupees. Upon his return to Pakistan, Wali was briefly detained by Afghan forces, but thanks to the intervention of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, he was released. In 2023, he resumed his duties at the Peshawar Police Line, as revealed by the IGP.

Wali informed investigators that Junaid had instructed him to avenge the death of Commander Khalid Khorasani. In January 2023, Wali sent Junaid photographs and a map of the Police Line mosque via Telegram.

On January 20, 2023, Wali escorted the Afghan suicide bomber, identified as Qari, from Charsadda Mosque to the Police Line mosque, where they conducted surveillance. He then took the bomber on a motorcycle to Rahman Baba Cemetery, where Qari was provided with a police uniform and a suicide vest. Wali dropped him off near the Police Line, and the bombing soon followed.

After the attack, Wali sent a message to Junaid on Telegram, confirming the success of the mission. In return for his role in the bombing, Wali was paid 200,000 rupees through an informal money transfer system.

Wali eventually confessed to participating in various other terrorist acts, such as the assassination of a Christian pastor in Peshawar in January 2022, as well as several IED attacks on Warsak Road in 2023 and 2024. He also took credit for a grenade attack at Ghulani Market in December 2023,
